Let’s talk about who’s in charge (and why that matters when the wind picks up).
Mike is your Captain—the final word on safety and navigation. Lena is your Skipper—handling boat systems, logistics, and knowing where we left the sunscreen. Together, they’re certified to run the boat without help from anyone else on board. That doesn’t mean they don’t want help—it just means they don’t need it. Especially not in a crisis.
They are both friendly and patient (mostly), but when things get windy, tight, or weird, follow instructions first, ask questions later. Curiosity is welcome—just maybe not while docking in 20 knots.
If you’d like to take the helm, just ask. You won’t be in charge, but you might get to steer for a while—until things get tricky, at which point the wheel goes back to Mike or Lena. No hard feelings. Steering is a privilege, not a right. And yes, it’s harder than it looks.
We’re not certified instructors, but we’ve sailed enough to show you the ropes (and the lines, and the winches, and the things-that-look-like-they-do-nothing-but-actually-matter). If you want to learn how to raise sails, pick up a mooring ball, tie to a rock, or coil something impressively—you’re welcome to jump in.
But fair warning: you will probably mess it up the first few times, and you will get feedback—usually immediate, sometimes loud. That’s part of the process. Mistakes are allowed, quitting is not. Watch what we do, ask questions after, and keep trying. We love teaching people who actually want to learn.
